( for tina. )

[ newt has never had to take care of theseus before, but there is a first time for everything. indeed, newt remembers taking care of theseus after the war, but he had only taken care of him in the barest sense of the word. checking on him, doing as he was told -- but this time, it was truly newt's turn to ensure his older brother stayed on course, after the events in paris.

they had come back home to london. the funeral had happened. theseus had retreated into his work, despite newt's best efforts to keep him home for a few weeks. but theseus had relented and allowed newt to badger him into spending time with him, to speak with him. to share in their grief.

that morning, theseus had indulged newt with breakfast, and while theseus was not his typical annoying self, he had made some attempt at normalcy in asking newt for details about tina. tina, who newt hadn't had time to properly sit down with and hash out . . . whatever this was, but newt had been more than happy to inform theseus of how perfect tina was, and theseus (to his credit) had pretended to be interested. eventually, though, theseus had asked newt to bring tina to dinner that evening, so they could have a proper introduction, and newt had (a bit sheepishly) told theseus he would rather have dinner with tina alone, before he had a family dinner.

there had been a bit of a back and forth with that, on their walk back to theseus' home, and eventually theseus had let it go, but not before offering newt some pieces of advice, in speaking to tina about his feelings.

first, apologize for taking this long to have this conversation. use me as an excuse if you have to. second, bring flowers. normal flowers, not venus fly traps or whatever you have in your suitcase of nightmares. third, take her out somewhere properly nice for dinner. fourth, be yourself. alright? don't settle for anyone who doesn't love you for who you are, bizarre or not.

newt had honestly tuned out at point two, but he had offered his brother a patient smile and absently agreed with whatever theseus had said. he had then asked theseus whether they could use the ministry as a gateway to help track grindelwald, in order to rescue queenie -- and that had earned a stony look, because theseus had little interest in "rescuing" anyone who gave themselves to grindelwald. but after much pestering, and pleading and quiet reminders that if it were newt, theseus would stop at nothing to bring him back to sanity, theseus had reluctantly agreed to make queenie goldstein his new project, while he combed his way through ministry records.

reluctantly, being the key word. when newt had tried to justify queenie's decision, to explain why queenie felt so upset, how tina had nothing to do with it, why grindelwald's words had worked so effectively upon queenie, he had only been met with a sharp: i said i would help, newt, i never said i would welcome her into the damn family.

that had been the pointed end of the conversation.

once they parted ways, newt had paced about for a bit before setting off to find tina. tina, who was in london properly, staying in an apartment near his home while the ministry investigated something or other concerning queenie and her connection to tina. and when newt appeared with a faint pop on her doorstep, his heart was racing in his chest as he tentatively tapped on the door.

no flowers. or real plan on what to say. or dinner ideas. explanations. news.

but he did know that he wanted to see tina. that was as good a place to start as any. ]
